Manual testing protocols are inherently slow, labor-intensive, and susceptible to human error. A single sample’s full analysis can take several hours, creating a bottleneck that prevents real-time data from guiding critical operational decisions like fuel blending. Moreover, the necessity for human intervention at multiple stages—from sample weighing and loading to data recording—introduces inconsistencies and potential points of data manipulation, raising concerns over both data integrity and operational transparency. While first-generation automated systems have alleviated some manual tasks, they often lack true intelligence. They typically rely on fixed-interval insertion of certified reference materials (CRMs) for quality control, which is inefficient and reactive. This rigid approach fails to adapt to the actual state of analytical instruments, wasting CRMs during periods of stability and potentially missing gradual instrument drift until a batch of production samples has been compromised.
To bridge this technological gap and achieve a genuinely unattended, trustworthy, and intelligent analytical workflow, we have designed, implemented, and validated an Intelligent Robotic Laboratory System. This system fundamentally reimagines coal quality analysis by integrating precision robotics, seamless automation, and sophisticated deep learning algorithms. It is engineered not merely for automation but for adaptive intelligence, enabling proactive quality assurance and predictive maintenance. The core philosophy is to achieve complete “segregation of personnel from samples and data,” thereby eliminating anthropogenic error sources and enhancing overall governance.

System Architecture and Core Capabilities of the Intelligent Robotic Laboratory
The intelligent robot-based system is a fully integrated platform architected for robustness, precision, and continuous operation. Its physical layout is strategically divided into a Normal-Temperature Zone and a High-Temperature Zone, each managed by dedicated industrial robotic manipulators to ensure optimal environmental control and operational reliability.
The Normal-Temperature Zone houses equipment sensitive to thermal fluctuation, primarily the calorimeter for heating value determination. A high-precision 6-axis intelligent robot performs all tasks here: receiving sample vials from a pneumatic tube system, uncapping, precisely weighing coal samples into crucibles, assembling and loading oxygen bombs into the calorimeter, and subsequently handling bomb disassembly and cleaning.
